Class of 2022 Updates

As indicated in our previous update, lawn/window signs are available for pick up on this Saturday, May 21.  Pick-up time is between 9:30AM and 11:00AM.

Additionally, to accommodate those who are unable to pick up the sign on the weekend options offered, we are permitting parents/guardians to pick up the sign  and stake this Thursday morning (May 19), between the hours of 7:30AM and 11:30AM, and next Tuesday afternoon (May 24), between the hours for 10:00AM and 2:00PM.

Families may also grab one for a friend, however, only families who have paid their senior dues are eligible to receive a sign.  Please be sure to bring ID and arrive via the main entrance.

Hello, families of the Paulo Class of 2022.  Pardon the cliché I am sure you have read too many times over the past many months, but I genuinely hope this message finds you and your loved ones in good health.  This will be the first of several updates as we head into the final months of your child’s middle school experience at Paulo.

Behind the scenes, our staff have been brainstorming ideas and working on ways to make our future graduates’ final year a memorable one, aside from yet another year of tumult attributed to the longer-than-expected reach of the pandemic.  Ongoing changes impacting the DOE, myriad factors outside our control, and future uncertainty present significant challenges.  That said, we are striving to do what we can to ensure our 8th graders look back upon their middle school years fondly and with pride, and finish on a positive note.

Senior Banquet

Due to current DOE guidance dictating eligibility for participation in school dances, we will not be holding our typical celebratory event.  Alternate arrangements, coordinated by several Paulo families, are being considered, however, any such plans are not school sanctioned.  For additional information, please contact our PTA.

Senior Trip

According to the most updated DOE guidance, field trips to NJ are permitted.  We have secured coach buses and have tentatively established Friday, June 3, 2022 as the date for our senior trip to Six Flags in Jackson, NJ.  Details on this are forthcoming, and note that the cost of this event is not included in senior dues.

Graduation

At this time, with regard to graduation, we plan on hosting the ceremony in-person in our schoolyard.  Tentative dates are Tuesday, June 21 and/or Wednesday, June 22.  Specifics are forthcoming.

Arista

Unless DOE guidance on visitor restrictions changes, the grade eight Arista ceremony will be held in our auditorium for students only, and will be live-streamed for families.  Details on this event, including notification of eligible candidates will be shared in due time via our Arista coordinator, Ms. Jeannine Valenti.  Keep in mind, for the 2021-22 school year, Arista eligibility requires the following:

  1. Scholarship – Academic average of at least 91.00% in each marking period with no grade, in any subject, below 80 or “S”. Please note that a single course grade of 79 or lower precludes a student from Arista.
  2. Citizenship – No citizenship grade below “S” (Satisfactory) in any marking period.
  3. Service – The attainment of at least 25 service credits per school year.

Senior Dues

As many of you know, the collection of senior dues is underway.  The cost of senior dues covers setup and materials that make our graduation ceremony beautiful and special. This includes your child’s graduation gown, diploma and diploma case, awards and certificates, graduation tickets (2 per family), and the graduate lawn/window signs. Senior dues also include the senior t-shirt, yearbook, video yearbook, and many other incidental but essential materials that make your child’s senior year memorable.  Payment of senior dues can be made via our website at https://www.is75.org/ under the School Store/Online Payments tab.  If you have any questions concerning the dues or activities planned, please reach out to our senior events coordinators, Ms. LaRocca or Ms. Boshnack, via PupilPath, or feel free to contact us at 718-701-6343.

Yearbook Ads

In case anyone has missed our previous correspondence regarding placing a yearbook ad, see the attached flyer and note the firm deadline of March 14, 2022. (Attachment sent via email.)

As the new year, a year that has promise to restore us, is now in full swing, expect periodic email updates and know that we will be relying on guidance from the DOE to inform numerous decisions related to our culminating ceremonial events and senior activities.

In closing, all of us at Paulo realize these are trying times, for everyone.  We know the class of 2022 deserves more, and we understand the frustration and disappointment students fear should they not be able to culminate three years of hard work and commitment as they had hoped and expected. Please know we are doing what we can to make the best out of far-from-ideal circumstances to create the best senior year possible considering the factors outside our control.  In this respect, we appreciate your patience, understanding and support as we navigate these unpredictable waters.

Sincerely,

Mark Reinhold

Class of 2022 Assistant Principal

Hello again, families of the Paulo Class of 2022. On the heels of the news regarding the lifting of mask mandates, we look forward to sharing some updates and reminders pertaining to culminating senior events here at Paulo.

But first, prior to the February mid-winter recess, our eighth graders participated in a highly engaging and cooperative game show assembly.  This was such a great experience for our seniors, who missed the opportunity for such social and lively interactions during much of their middle school years.  It was refreshing to see them laugh, cheer, compete, and just be kids in a wholesome and united way.  Events like these are what makes middle school at Paulo so special, and something our students will hopefully fondly look back upon when they recall their adolescent years.  We are currently planning and look forward to a similarly fun and energetic assembly in the spring.

Graduation Update

Our goal with regard to graduation is to recognize our seniors’ accomplishments in a way that not only ensures the safety and health of those who attend, but in a manner befitting their diligence, resolve, and achievements, especially over the course of the last several years.  With this in mind, we are planning two in–person, outdoor ceremonies to be held in our schoolyard, for students and two guests/family members per graduate/family only.  The ceremonies will take place at 9:00AM and 12:00PM on Wednesday, June 22, with Thursday, June 23 and Friday, June 24 are set aside as rain dates, if needed.  As we implemented last year, a Google form will be shared as we get closer to the event to enable families to register for either ceremony.  To be clear, families will be able to choose either the morning or afternoon ceremony, on a first come-first serve basis.

Under current DOE guidance, masks are no longer required nor is proof of vaccination necessary.  Should anything change is this regard, you will be notified.  Additional details regarding the ceremonies are forthcoming.

Senior Dues

The deadline to pay senior dues has been extended through the end of March.   The cost of senior dues covers setup and materials that make our graduation ceremony beautiful and special. This includes your child’s graduation gown, diploma and diploma case, awards and certificates, graduation tickets (2 per family), and the graduate lawn/window signs. Senior dues also include the two t-shirts, various special assemblies, the yearbook, and many other incidental but essential materials that make your child’s senior year memorable.  Payment of senior dues can be made via our website at https://www.is75.org/ under the School Store/Online Payments tab.  If you have any questions concerning the dues or activities planned, please reach out to our senior events coordinators, Ms. LaRocca or Ms. Boshnack, via PupilPath, or feel free to contact us at 718-701-634.

Senior Trip

As of this writing, our senior trip to Six Flags in Jackson, NJ on June 3 is a go!  Coach buses have been secured, and all students who attend must wear their senior tee (which they will receive shortly beforehand).  Students will receive transportation to and from Six Flags, an admission ticket and meal voucher.  Please visit our website to complete the parent/guardian consent form and remit payment.  Specifics are outlined in the attached letter.

Yearbook Ads

The firm deadline of March 14, 2022 is quickly approaching!!  In case anyone has missed our previous correspondence regarding placing a yearbook ad, see the attached flyer.

Senior Awards

To recognize our future graduates who have earned special distinction over the course of their three years at Paulo, we will be also be hosting a special senior awards ceremony.  Unless DOE guidance on visitor restrictions/vaccination status changes, the senior awards ceremony will be held during the school day in our auditorium with students only, and will be live-streamed for families.  The date for this special event is still to be determined and will be communicated at a later time.

Arista (tentative date is Friday, May 20)

Of note, for your convenience, all Class of 2022 updates are also posted on our school website under the Parents tab, under the Class of 2022 Updates dropdown.

Again, you can and should expect periodic updates related to culminating events as the school year winds down.  Please know we strive to ensure our 8th graders look back upon their middle school years fondly and with pride, and finish on a positive note.  We will continue to do what we can to make the best out of the circumstances.  In this respect, we appreciate your patience, understanding and support over the course of your child’s last few months here at Paulo.

As we approach our seniors’ final months here at Paulo, below are a few updates relating to our culminating events.

Graduation Ceremony Change

In lieu of multiple ceremonies, we will be holding a single ceremony for all graduates on Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at 9:00AM in our schoolyard.  (Rain date is Thursday, June 23.)  Each family will receive two tickets (graduates do not require a ticket).  Please be advised that only students who have met promotional requirements for eighth grade may participate in the graduation ceremony.

There will be limited additional seating available for guests.  Beginning June 1st, if you wish to receive additional graduation tickets, a written request to the attention of our parent coordinator, Ms. Taccetta, including the number of additional tickets needed (2 maximum) and the reason for the request, must be submitted.  All written requests will be honored based on need and in the order they are received.  As this year’s graduating class is sizable, please note that only 1 additional ticket will likely be granted in most cases.  Please plan accordingly. We will continue to accept requests as long as tickets are available.

As per current DOE guidance, visitors attending an outdoor school event, such as our commencement ceremony, are not required to show proof of vaccination but must complete the Health Screening questionnaire on the day of the event.

Graduation Gown Distribution

Students who have paid their senior dues will receive their graduation gown this week, on Thursday, April 28th.  These gowns should be hung (not ironed) to remove any wrinkles.  Replacement of misplaced/damaged gowns costs $20 and may not be feasible on short notice in the final weeks of the school year.

Paulo Graduate Lawn/Window Sign Distribution

Because the stakes accompanying the sign are potentially unsafe to distribute en masse during the school day, lawn/window signs are available for pick up on the following Saturdays: April 30 and May 21.  Pick up times are between 9:30AM and 11:00AM.

Families may also grab one for a friend, however, only families who have paid their senior dues are eligible to receive a sign.  Please be sure to bring ID and arrive via the main entrance.

Senior Trip and Senior Dues – In order to be eligible to attend our senior trip to Six Flags in Jackson, NJ on June 3, students must meet our academic and behavioral expectations, as outlined on the attached letter.  Further, students will be not permitted to attend the senior trip if his or her senior dues are not paid.

Payment of senior dues and the senior trip can be made via our website at https://www.is75.org/ under the School Store/Online Payments tab.  If you have any questions concerning the dues or activities planned, please reach out to our senior events coordinators, Ms. LaRocca or Ms. Boshnack, via PupilPath, or feel free to contact us at 718-701-634.

Arista and Senior Awards

The grade eight Arista ceremony is slated for 9:00AM on Wednesday, May 18th.  Our senior awards ceremony is set for  June 14th at 6:00PM.  As these are indoor events, a limited number of vaccinated guests will be permitted to attend, and the event will be live-streamed for all unable to partake in person.  Details on each event, including notification of eligible candidates will be shared soon via our Arista coordinator, Ms. Jeannine Valenti and our Senior Awards coordinator, Ms. Ann Coscio.

Additional senior upcoming events:

June 1 – Grade 8 assembly Tic-Tac-Toe (similar to game show assembly earlier in the year)

June 17 – Panther Day/Talent Show

June 24 – Shutterbug Day/Carnival

In closing, I look forward to recognizing the Class of 2022’s achievements over the past three years at our upcoming culminating events.  These events are, after all, not only a celebration of your child’s accomplishments, but a testament to your hard work, patience, support, and trials in parenthood during a most difficult time.
